Philippines seeks $5B from IMF, others

The Philippines is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund
and others for up to $5 billion in credit, even though the country's
economy remains among the soundest in troubled Southeast Asia.
President Fidel Ramos says he is seeking standby funds of at least
$2.7 billion from the IMF, and the country also is negotiating with
the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Ramos says the move to
seek the credit is a "precautionary" measure. (USA Today)
