Dear Kathy, If this gadget can fractionate bound and unbound bilirubin, it will prevent the situation you describe. If not then you may have simply added one more test. Remember there's "always one more test" you can perform on a patient. In strategizing the care of these infants you need to keep it simple. If this thing does that, great. If it is simply one more SKU (CPT) then I'm offended. Given the limited time and resource you have to apply to any one situation, if it takes away from the overall treatment by adding one more billable procedure, it could be very costly. Sometimes you simply have to inflict a bruise to end up with a normal child. I'm familiar with similar arguments for transfusions. Mothers who insist on giving their kids blood transfusions from family members only. Who would have guessed that this 'gift from the heart' would lead to higher infection rates and higher rates of cancer? It also turns out that there is a higher risk of hepatitis, Aids, etc. That's why you subject these sorts of things to rigorous tests. It pays to be skeptical. BTW, being a mom is cool too. Dan
