Few people not involved in the 60's do not realize it was primarily an intellectual movement. It was about ideas. We were all thinking about how a society should function and things like civil rights abuses.

It was the first major existential movement in the history of mankind.

In the SF Bay area Herman Hesse was the most widely read author. I read everything he ever wrote.

But we were reading and discussing all the great thinkers. And I do not mean Steinbeck and Hemingway. I mean "The Catcher in the Rye", Camus, Sartre, Nietzsche, Doestevsky, Russell, Whitehead, Huxley, Watts, Joyce and Elliot, etc. Mark Twain :>).

Reading that stuff will change a man's life.
