The situation is fubar, which is why we should have never gotten into this situation.

I think the first thing to do is recognize that there are no good solutions. Every possible solution leaves us with egg on our face, and Iraq a very unstable nation.

Given that, I would seek a solution that results in the fewest American casualties. Announce that we have accomplished our mission in Iraq, are proud to have brought freedom to its people, will be pulling most of our troops out at year's end, and by the way if the UN would like to get involved it is welcome to do so.

The only alternative to that is to attempt to make Iraq a civilized and stable pro-US nation, which ain't going to happen.
