Metacomet,
Do you have any reason to doubt the veracity of the statement?
Yes I do.

First of all, painting independents as former Republicans who still think like Republicans is a sweeping generalization and an extraordinary claim. Every other poll of independents then becomes meaningless, because you'd have to assume that it's no different than polling Republicans.

Secondly, the race card is obvious. The insinuation is that anyone who is white and not a Democrat will automatically call Obama the "worst president ever" simply because of race.

Third, the denial is obvious. Is it too far-fetched to think that a truly independent thinker would call Obama the "worst president ever"? Is it too far-fetched to think that, after winning the votes of independents in the past two elections, Obama may have betrayed their trust?

And finally, many independents were also former D's who got turned off by politics as usual, especially after believing in "hope and change." That is just as intuitive as the fact that many independents were former R's who got turned off by their own party politics.

Hence I have plenty of doubts as to the veracity of that statement.
