Britain's Blair gains place in history: Italy's Berlusconi

ROME, May 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Friday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair has made history after his Labor Party secured a third straight victory in Thursday's election.

"The extraordinary result" had vindicated Blair's policies and earned him "a place in history," Berlusconi said in his message to Blair.

"You are an example to all of us because of what you have done over the last eight years," the Italian prime minister said.

Reports from Britain said the latest results in the general election showed Blair's Labor Party, a 100-year-old socialist party that dominates the British center-left, had won a parliamentary majority of about 60 seats, down from 161 at the 2001 poll.

The reduced majority has increased speculations that Blair may not fulfill his pledge of serving out his third term as prime minister.

With the post-election mood contrasting sharply with the euphoria of 1997 and 2001 landslides, reports said Blair will possibly hand over the reins earlier than expected to popular Chancellor of Exchequer Gordon Brown. Enditem
