Oh, I'm sure McCain had a telephone conversation with Joe the Plumber and said something like this:

Joe, er, ah, I mean Sam ... don't you worry a bit. When I'm the president I'll, personally, make sure you get your plumber's license and I'll have one of the lobbyists on my staff assist you with the funds you need to buy your plumbing company. All ya gotta do is just keep being Joe the Plumber for me for a little while longer. OK?
