Google Dominates Smartphones, But Apple Catching Up
By PETE BARLAS, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY - Posted 02:04 PM ET

Google ( GOOG) still dominates the smartphone market in the U.S. but Apple ( AAPL) is showing some signs
of catching up.The Web search leader ended September with a 52.5% share of the smartphone subscriber
market in the U.S., with Apple holding down a second-place ranking with 34.3% share, according to research
firm ComScore, which released its findings Friday.

Apple's share increased 1.9 percentage points from the 32.4% share of the market it had in June. Google grew
by only 0.9 points from the 51.6% it held in June.

What's more, Apple's share in September jumped from the 27.4% share it held in September 2011.
Conversely, Google's share in September jumped from the 44.8% share it held in the year-ago period,
ComScore says.

Both companies, though, continue to blow away other rivals such as Research in Motion ( RIMM), Microsoft
( MSFT) and Symbian, a smartphone operating system managed by Accenture ( ACN), a management
consulting and IT services company. All three saw their shares of the market fall in September vs. June and
the year-ago period.

Of the three, RIM, which ranks third, fared the worst. The company's 8.4% share of smartphone users in
September tumbled from the 18.9% share it owned in September 2011.
