Getting beyond politcal polemics, it seems obvious that those who planned and carried out the attack had to know it would probably trigger a massive US response. That probably is what they hope for. Escalating violence in the Mideast could topple some of the pro-US regimes in the area and lead to global economic and financial chaos.
