I'm not so sure that "most observers" is accurate, or that if it is accurate that it is so for any other reason than not having good alternative sources of information. As for "including MacNamara", that is just about meaningless to me.

Also once again you ignore the fact that we didn't start the war but rather where defending an ally against aggression.

but like the Germans and the Japanese after WWII, I believe it is necessary to be honest about the war for the purpose of never doing the same thing again

Certainly not in the same way, because our intervention was in the end ineffective, but it was not similar to the actions of the Germans or the Japanese in WWII, it was in practice flawed but it was not an act of aggression, nor one rife with war crimes.
