Andreas,

Even almost 60 years later there's still some "resentment" (hatred would probable be too strong a word) among group representing them.

Resentement is cheap, it doesn't require you to do anything, you can just sit at home watch TV drink beer and be resentful. <g>

E.g. our chancellor cancelled a visit to Czech(sp?) because their president made some strange remarks about the Sudeten Germans (something about being "Hitler's last cohort").

I have not been following the news from there in detail, but somehow, I think it must have been the prime minister (who is a complete idiot), not the president (Vaclav Havel), who is more diplomatic, sometimes even thoughtful.

So this is IMO a good example that even under the best circumstances (new homes for the refugees, booming economy etc.) it takes a long time until things normalize again.

My understanding was that Germany was totally broke, with not enough homes even for German citizens (a lot of homes, apartment buildings having been destroyed), not to mention refugees / deportees from the east. Nothing was waiting for them. They couldn't bring much with them. They had to start from absolutely nothing, not unlike Palestinians.

Joe
