Mornin', Christine

Yes, you are correct. The 55 mph speed limit was instituted shortly after the first oil embargo. Remember the lines of cars that stretched for blocks around gas stations back then? It was a time of panic and craziness. Oil was running out. The sky was falling, too! People who had never said, "fill 'er up" in their automotive lives felt suddenly compelled to top off their tanks and keep 'em full. Gasoline quickly shot up to 40 cents a gallon. 1973 was the year the big gas-guzzling cars met their demise, or at the least it was the beginning of the end for them.

Somewhere back on this thread I told the story of G. Elizabeth Carmichael and the mind-boggling scam she managed to pull off with her bogus car, the Dale. The oil embargo and resulting public FUD factor was her best friend throughout her incredible hoax.
