Ref <but I believe that awacs planes can assume control of military aircraft >

The AWACS can vector a fighter plane on to its target, presumably an enemy plane. This allows the fighter plane to turn off its radar, and thus make it less visible to the enemy, and allows a stealthier intercept. The active radar on the fighter plainly gives away the position of the fighter, and is turned on only when the enemy is very close.

However this does not allow landing and other trickier aspects of flying. The AWACS is merely programming the autopilot of the interceptor aircraft.
