Quicker keypad entry method being adopted for handheld devices:

T9 Makes Text Entry Easy

"T9, which stands for ‘text on nine keys,' is the new standard for unlocking the power of handheld devices with telephone or touch screen keypads. T9 lets users type with the same efficiency as on a desktop keyboard on such products as wireless phones, handheld computers, two-way pagers and much more. Tegic Communications is currently licensing T9 in many languages to major communications equipment and consumer electronics manufacturers.

T9 employs an intelligent software protocol that allows users to enter text just as they would on a desktop keyboard. You just need one key-press for each letter. Although each key contains multiple letters (the "5" key, for example, can be used to type "J," "K," or "L,") the T9 algorithm automatically determines from all the possible variations what word you are typing. The T9 software protocol simply matches your keystrokes with completed words from a linguistic database."
