Almost always the side of the connector toward the middle of
the drive is pin 1.

All drives I've observed have the missing pin which, if
the cable has a plugged hole like it's supposed to, prevents
misplugging the cable. Only one in a couple of dozen
cables have the pin properly blocked, though. Triumphs
of technology over common sense ...
