I think you raise a good point. A report I read about a year ago mentions the huge potential for extractive industries in China. It mentioned great reserves of minerals, oil, timber, precious metals, and fine marble. It was published by Paine Weber as I recall but I don't know how to find it. The Daqing oil field was one of the post 1949 great success stories, only slipping in production during the cultural revolution, to quickly return to the fore afterwards.

There must be published data on this.
