My friend just bought a 2015 Prius that Toyota had to replace the battery on before they could sell it. It cost Toyota dealer here $4k for the new battery. He paid $13k. 10 year warranty on the battery.
He gets over 50mpg. This week driving on flat ground he hit 68 mpg.

He bought it because he never has to charge it and it pays for itself because he's saving $400+ per month on gas.

That's how EV's work.... If it's really cheaper and reliable. But in this case, the hybrid ability is what really works. It must make financial sense. His gas savings will pay for the car in 3 years then he has 7 years of profit to follow. he will be $2k in the green by end of the 3rd year.
