INTEL vs. AMD in current PC environment.

Now IBM and Gateway want to be all Intel boxmakers (I guess they saw the advantages...partly Dell's success).

Compaq and HP merger means that the boxmakers that AMD depends to a large extent for their volume may be losing market share to the Intel only boxmakers. There seems to be consensus among analysts that a merger means that competitors will get more volume, partly because many companies like to have alternative suppliers and a merger means that some will have to turn to an ibm/dell or other.

So as I see it, Intel's earnings and outlook on October 16 will suprise for than just a few analysts. IMHO, they are going to look like a bunch of total dummies--just as they did when Dell presented their outlook. So many were sure Dell would be guiding down...yea useless "analysis".

Intel's market share will be on the rise (in consumer segment where AMD is/was strong) for the rest of the year with Windows XP and Pentium 4 advertising blitz that is going to start late this month. I am just wondering whether some high profile analysts would want to get ahead of the earnings and upgrade.
-Dan Niles (doubt it)
-Ashok Kumar (a small possibility)
-Drew Peck was usually pushing AMD and he is now seeing the downfall of that company and may want to go against the flow of negative comments on Intel to make a name for himself.

Will be a very interesting couple of weeks.
