Great post Lindy. I'm one who admits that once upon a time, when I was about 17, I thought governments were good and that it's better to have "a single supplier as it's much more efficient" and government-owned at that.

It seemed silly to have three bus companies going down the same road trying to get customers when one organization could have better timetables, better loadings, lower costs, better maintenance, less congestion and all that. It seemed better than charity be run by a central authority to which we all contributed rather than a good luck bad luck system where a talented beggar could earn a fortune while a legless hopeless case couldn't beg a dime.

After not long, starting with the government's idea that conscripting me would be a good idea, [which they fortunately, for them, and me, didn't do] and after not many years of seeing industry, government, and life's activities up close and personal, I realized that human nature is unfit for state control and even large private control. Companies seem able to only get to a certain size and complexity before they become like the USSR.

The medical guild is one of the worst excesses of state power.
