I have to say that nomination caused me for the first time to question his intelligence or common sense.

My pet premise is that he is just someone who doesn't place much value on intellect--after all, he's done quite well--so he doesn't recognize that there are at least a few jobs, like the SC, where the requirement for fine mind and an intellectual bent are a given. Intellect as a quality or a commodity just isn't on his radar. He was looking for other qualities.
