Lots of people are widely hated. I worked for as a UN famine relief coordinator in Ethiopia in the mid-80s in the middle of their "civil war" (a euphemism for 'no government' and lots of rival groups) -- you get to meet many people who are heavily armed. They were hated. They were feared. Under those circumstances you sometimes ask "who is the government here" -- and the answer is "whoever is pointing a gun at your head". I am not the only one speaking about the possible urban chaos of taking and occupying Baghdad and overthrowing their government, then creating a new one. I am not saying it will be as hopeless as Somalia, but to think that we will be greeted as "liberators" is pure American propaganda. Look at the West Bank. Look at Lebanon in the 80s. Urban areas are a nightmare to control. I am not by any means directly experienced with the Arab Muslim world -- most of the Muslims I have known in the last ten years are in Asia. But I can tell you this: The whole of the Muslim world will feel outraged by such an attack. It will be viewed as an attack on their brothers. It will be viewed as an attack on their faith even though they might hate Saddam as much or more than we do. They will view it as an invasion. They will view it in terms as negative as we could find in the dictionary. It is foolish to expect otherwise. Before going in, you have to think about what happens if the whole region erupts. The terrorist groups will love it --nothing could be better for them. It is probably what they want.
