They certainly gave him a pass. What you are missing was that his corruption was so massive and overt they couldn't completely ignore it. To make it brief (there's a LOT that could be said): The mainstream media treated Watergate as a holy crusade to rid the nation of a terribly corrupt president. They covered the Clinton impeachment as an attempt by sour grapes Republicans to get revenge for the election. Neither coverage was objective, unbiased, or realistic, but it made the ENTIRE difference in the ultimate result. And their left-wing commitment was illuminated to all but the most glassy-eyed liberals...
