ABC News Reports:

Calls for regulation rather than prohibition of Internet gambling
Thursday 25 February, 1999 (12:58pm AEDT)

A gaming expert from the United States has described moves to prohibit Internet gambling as a "thinly veiled" attempt at stamping out gambling altogether.

Sue Schneider, from the US Interactive Gaming Council, says instead of trying to prohibit online gambling, the industry should be looking at ways to regulate it.

She has told the Australasian Casinos and Gaming Conference on the Gold Coast, that safeguards could be established to make Internet gambling safer than gambling at a casino.

"I think it's really a pretty thinly veiled anti-gaming piece of legislation," Ms Schneider said.

"I think there are concerns that it's in the home, herefore it's going to be more prevalent and more able to be abused.

"Ironically I think just because it is an electronic medium, in some ways it's got more safeguards built into it than a typical casino operation."
