re: I think we need that stuff as incentives
I do agree, the main flaw of any utopian society, IMHO, is that it is bound to be stagnant as there is no personal incentives. The idea is that we can replace traditional incentives with artificial like "to better yourself" and "to do it for humankind" is idiotic at best and inhumane at worst. The concept is based on erasing of any traces of individualism and to creates a "gray" mob that follows the "program". All utopian ideas bound to ended up the same way independant if they are born in French revolution or Russian - bloody disaster.

Lenin worked on creating communism through stages where at the end of:
1st - workers were given tools to produce
2nd - tools were taken away from them and nationalized - socialism
3rd - communism

The 1st stage was basically a creation of small business owners and was fairly successful as it was a form of capitalism.
The 2nd stage backfired right away, as people did not like to part with the achievements of their labor. That was 1st economic disaster. To bring country out of economic disaster so called "New Economic Politics" was introduced. It was pure capitalism and it took country out of its economic depression. Once economy recovered all of the newly born capitalists ended up in hard labor camps or simply executed. Eventually socialism was proclaimed in Russia.

It was a fight between "righteous" worker and "evil" capitalists and as such could not be a democracy.

There is no sacrifice is too big if it is in the name of the working class even if you are sacrificing your working class.

re: Unbelievably, Russia seems now to be coming out of its long winter......
part of Poland was constantly going from either been a part of Poland or a part of Byelorussia. So the old man in the village asked who are they right now to which he was told that it is Poland now. The old man said, "good, I can not stand those Russian Winters"
