Bill, there are reports that seem to be corroborated from multiple sources. Whether or not they constitute objective evidence is a matter of debate.

But the reports do seem to fit what Trump did say in the past, especially about John McCain:

Fact check: Donald Trump did call John McCain a loser (Detroit Free Press)

Whether he was serious or not, what Trump said was pretty disgusting and cowardly.

So no, it wasn't an "obvious lie," except to people in severe denial.
