Timeline on Motorola . . .

We are all familiar with the press release announcing an alliance between IDX and Motorola, and the now-burgeoning PR campaign MOT has begun that has used Identix as an example of a high tech company with cool technology.

On Yahoo, there's been some discussion over when -- or even, whether -- we can expect to see joint IDX/MOT products for cell phones, etc.

My view is that we will see these products, even if they are not yet ready for market. The Motorola ads featuring IDX get their best payoff if this happens. However, I don't expect to see it happen right away -- certainly, not for at least several months, while the advertising campaign plays itself out.

We can get another clue on timelines from this passage in the February 1999 Global Telephony: "Grant Evans, vice president of marketing sales for Identicator Technology Inc., says his company is already working with key telecom players, meaning pilot products could be available within 18 months. For example, Evans says users will flip open a cellular phone, press a thumb on a small panel, and the phone will recognize the authorized user and even know the password to the corporate network."

Eighteen months from February 1999 = August 2000. Even per Mr. Evans, the pilot products are not right around the corner.
