Into "Peter,Paul, and Mary," Huh? "Puff, the Magic Dragon," on your personal hit parade? I knew you used to sing kum ba yah

That wasn’t the scene then, at least not anywhere but the movies. For me – and for a number of others, I think – it was the Great American Travel Agency, the only way an impecunious youngster could see the world without paying for it. The musical taste inclined more toward the Grateful Dead.

The most effective PCV I ever met was a farm boy from Georgia, only person I ever heard speak Cebuano with a southern accent. I was with him when he got to the village where he was assigned: at that time the policy was for volunteers to be introduced by other volunteers who had been in the area longer. We’d been there about 15 minutes when he found out that the old gas-powered pump they used for irrigation had been out of order for months. The guy whipped out his tool kit and had the thing stripped down to lowest terms in no time flat, and the village was panicking. Very soon thereafter the pump was purring, the water was flowing, and he could do no wrong.

One guy like that can do more good in a 3rd world village than any number of ag school graduates.
