Looks to me like S3 stock is down due to tracking UMC which is probably fell, at least somewhat, in sympathy to Intel.

The Mako looks interesting, although I can't figure out why S3 wants to enter the already crowded PDA market (can't they think of something more innovative and unique to invest in?). Maybe it is simply the opportunity to cash in on brand recognition and make a few bucks without actually having to develop a product (since this is an OEM deal).

However, even if Mako-like PDAs are a huge hit in Europe, it is hard to imagine a non-Palm PDA doing very well in the USA. Also, the obvious question is whether the near simultaneous announcements of the $400 Mako PDA and the $1500 Front Path Pro Gear web pad will confuse customers (not to mention investors), since both products appear to be portable computer gizmos with a non-standard O/S.
