See Chicago, 13th edition, 10.36. Like just about everything connected to grammar, "rules" are really agreed upon conventions, and hence not really rules in the strictest sense of the term. Spaces between dots are easier on the eyes, and are thus preferred, sez this maven. "Rules" tend to be pretty fluid.

If you want to be in agreement with the consensus of the mavens of the MLA and Chicago, use four when you want to indicate the omission of the end of a sentence. The first dot is the period. See Chicago 10.42 and 10.43. Four should also be used to indicated the omission of the first part of the next sentence.
