FRANCE CONT'D [Jonah Goldberg]

From a reader:

Dear Jonah,

I will defer to you on wether Islam is the whole story behind the Paris riots. It is quite possible there are more issues involved. I will however pose this question. Do you think the MSM has studied and thoroughly investigated the issue enough to reach that conclusion, and to therefore decide to downplay the religious angle? I somehow doubt it. The best reporting going on nowdays is coming from opinion journalists (Byron York, Claudia Rosett, and Stephen F. Hayes are among the most notable lately). The MSM has lost its ability to report in their effort to remain "objective". In addition, I don't recall the MSM hesitating to cite race as THE issue in the LA riots.

Me: I think this raises a very good point and one I should have emphasized. I don't think for a moment the reporters, editors, anchors and the rest who've decided to keep the Islamic angle silent are doing so because they're sure it's not important. They're soft peddling it because they're scared of being seen as insensitive, kowtowing to CAIRish sensibilities, and taking the word of French diplomatic types who warn about making matters worse. This is what I was getting at when I said French media coverage of American riots would be very different. Nobody cares about denouncing American society -- remember all the hype about the anti-Arab backlash after 9/11? Remember a zillion pictures from Abu Ghraib, a news blackout on images of people jumping from the towers?

CNN is especially egregious on this sort of thing because they cater to a worldwide market and think they are a global news network not merely a provincial American one. This has got to be the most dangerous form of media bias around today.
