I don't want to engage in any debate on this since I know where you stand on these issues and respect that, but I believe the denial and deceit has been found on both sides of the aisle and that the continuing demonization of the opposing sides is damaging us and impeding our ability to make any progress on issues. Any "progress" being made is on the backs of pork and sneaky tactics.

My somewhat shameful moment of schadenfreude sprang very simply from the French saying that things weren't as bad as they were being portrayed and the media response surprised them. Welcome to our world. I have wondered why people put so much more faith in foreign press than our own. I saw some BBC stories during Katrina that had my mouth hanging open at their blatant attempt to make things uglier than they were (when they hardly needed to be exaggerated!).

But as for the situation- it is frightening and deplorable, and I don't wish it on any country. The implications are serious for us all.
