Unfortunately, we have a lot of conservatives that keep on saying this is a
Democratic Republic and the people aren't supposed to have a say in the
specifics; they're just supposed to elect their choice and lean back in their
easy chair and let the Congress and Administration do what's 'best'.

Well, they're right about the Democratic Republic. It was set up that way because the Founders flatly rejected a pure democracy.

But they also expected the people to be actively involved in the political process. That's what the right to petition for grievances is all about.
