The above is the datasheet for the part in question. The temperature measurement is used to compensate for the variation in oscillator frequency at the range of operating temperatures. So yes the frequency is kept constant by compensating for the drift that normally occurs at a given temnperature. A trimmer cap would only allow for correction of the oscillator frequency at a given temperature (and therefore temperature related innacuracy would still occur).

I agree that if an internet connection or GPS etc is available it is the cheapest way to achieve the required accuracy.
