Zi Shares Move Up On License Deal, Index Changes

CALGARY (Reuters) - Market darling Zi Corp. (Nasdaq:ZICA - news) opened the week with gains on the Toronto Stock Exchange Monday after announcing the latest in a string of license deals.

The Calgary-based software developer, a new arrival on Toronto's TSE 200 and TSE 300 indexes, gained 60 Canadian cents to C$13.30 in strong morning trade of more than 166,000 shares. The issue has soared from a low point of C$1.23 on June 23 to a recent high of C$16.50.

Zi said Monday that it had signed a licensing and royalty deal with Synchronization Inc. (Eastcom), a subsidiary of China's Eastern Communications Co. Ltd. Zi software, which allows Chinese characters to be entered on traditional keypads and keyboards, will be integrated with a range of Eastcom cellular phones.

Zi announced this summer a string of licensing deals for the incorporation of its software on phones and set-top TV boxes, which combine computers and televisions, being sold in the burgeoning Chinese market. Partners include Ericsson Communications and two of China's largest government ministries.

The Eastcom deal coincides with Zi's addition Monday to the TSE 300 and TSE 200 indexes.

Zi has also been added to Standard & Poor's S&P/TSE Canadian Small Cap Index.
