I think this Haaretz piece gives a pretty realistic picture of the forces at play in France concerning Israel, it's worth a read. Things like the Muslim community (and upcoming presidential elections this spring), post colonialism w/r Algeria, basically lots of stuff conspire to ensure that whether la Gauche or la Droite wins, they'll put Israel way way down on their list of priorities for fair treatment. Hell, they can't even manage to do something about this "hobby" of firebombing cars in the housing projects (several hundred or something incinerated for New Years Eve), how can they be expected to look into the odd synagogue that gets vandalized? Moreover, there's a certain contempt for private property, it seems kind of OK for José Bové and his commandos to enter agricultural research labs and destroy the work in progress for example.
