I agree completely -- and they turned out to be not so dumb after all - but during the mania quite a few of them jumped into the foolishness despite their prior caution. Not everyone was sucked in, not by a long shot. But the numbers who were are not small. IMO, and a lot of them were "educated" forty and fifty somethings -- those are the ones wondering what to do now about retirement funds they squandered.
