I couldn't agree more. Discipline and religion work on some kids, but not all. Sometimes kids really need attention, which takes a lot of time. Many of my students need someone to talk to, and they need to talk one of one. And when they feel they have been listened to, the changes in their behavior and their work can be astounding. Actually, I've found the same goes for the parents as well. There are a lot of people in our society just waiting to feel listened to. And when they are- it's powerful- but listening isn't something you can rush, and if I had 160 kids instead of 80, it would be much more difficult (perhaps impossible) to do what I do.
