Hotels desperately need to fill space and so they had plenty of inventory at very good prices. I travel a lot, and talk to the check-in agents. Bookings from ROOM show up in a different system than bookings over the phone, so they know how many people are booking that way. The service is simple, easy to use, and in doing maybe 50 bookings on it I've never had a problem, and I often book same day. And, numbers had come WAYYYYY down since the 11 September attacks, and I thought they could hit the original #s (which they did).

So just good old fashioned Earlie-style "look beyond your driveway" research led me to what seemed a prudent speculation. Plus I'm just damned lucky recently <g> (I mean, a punt AND a blocked FG returned for touchdowns in the SAME GAME.....)
