Last June Democratic Senator Dick Durbin compared interrogators at Guantanamo Prison Camp to Nazis. And he defended himself shortly thereafter. Yet a few days later he apologized.

A politician, actually anyone constantly in the public eye, must seek to avoid saying things that can be taken out of context, or where it is necessary to grasp the whole statement so the public is not put off by a seemingly disturbing part.

I wouldn't defend Bennett's shortsightedness. Nor would I chastise him were I a peer.

I'm saying he should know better. And having got caught making an error of judgment, he should know that it is more expedient to apologize and move on.

Having appeared in the press a fair amount, I know the only thing worse than being misquoted is to be quoted accurately.

As you point out, it would be nice if the public didn't look for opportunities to bring down their leaders, but that simply isn't the nature of the species. A public figure cannot survive by telling a chastising public how wrong they are. It just doesn't work that way and a smart politician will not try to be righteous, but will apologize and ostensibly kowtow to public sentiment.
