betty ann, I hope you also have a regular surge protector on the power cord. Otherwise a surge can easily come through your power cord, into the mother-board circuits, through the ISA slot connectors, and up into your modem circuits. Ka-blam-o. In any case, if you get a fairly direct lightning strike or real powerful surge, a surge protecter you can buy at the store isn't going to help much. This is not to say that surge protectors are worthless. Anything is better than nothing. Plus, most surge protectors provide 5-10 thousand in insurance in case the surge protector fails, even in the case of a direct lightning strike. I definitely use a surge protector, but I haven't yet for my modem line (although there are jacks for the phone line on the surge protector. Maybe I should start using them).
