Samsung WCDMA Handset in 2004 >> Samsung Electronics To Launch 3G Handset Early Next Yr Apr 18 2003 Seoul AFX-Asia Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said that it plans to release handsets for 3G wireless services on the market early next year when local carriers are expected to begin full mobile service under the new platform. "We will launch the 3G handsets on the market early next year," the company's investor relations team vice-president Chu Woo-Sik told reporters. Chu also said the memory chip industry will see better market conditions in the second half, backed by a pick-up in demand for PCs, although the oversupply problem will continue throughout the first half. The company spent about 2.0 trln won on capital expenditure in the first quarter out of its yearly target of 6.78 trln. As for the corporate governance issue, Chu stressed that the company has a world-renowned corporate governance structure. He also said Samsung is not very concerned about a possible fall in its DRAM contract prices if Hynix dumps the chips onto the spot market to avert punitive tariffs from the US and Europe. << - Eric -
