"Mukhtar Mai, a diminutive teaching assistant, was gang raped on the orders of her village panchayat (council) as a revenge-punishment for a crime allegedly committed by her younger brother." I was quite struck with this story when first reported (to my eyes) in the NYT the three or whatever years ago. The story reported by Peter Foster leaves out some critical detail and errs in others. Mukhtar's brother, it was reported, was engaged in an affair with a man from another village. When this came to light, the family of the other man sought to shine the light of their humiliation elsewhere by alleging that Mukhtar's brother had defiled a young woman of their village. Its panchayat ordered the ritual rape of Mukhtar to avenge the supposed rape of one of their number, so she was raped in the name of tribal revenge to cover up a different tribal humiliation.
