A student in Hungary, he got an "F" on his first big physics exam in NYC (City College, if I am remembering correctly).
Yes, when he went there, it was CCNY, has since achieved university status, and is CUNY. I college recruited there once, in the late 80s, and it looked probably like it did when Andy was there, i.e., no new buildings like you see at a lot of universities.
there have been few books about the chip industry. Dirk Hanson's "The New Alchemists," Tim Jackson's "Inside Intel," and just a very few others.
I thought "Inside Intel" was outstanding, a history of a pretty large part of the semiconductor industry, not just Intel. And, it has a lot of human nature, rather than just all technical.
