But that's my main point--they aren't recurring.

Capital gains and losses are sufficiently significant part of earnings to justify that. I am surprised that in your company portfolio composition is secondary - if I interpret your real world statement correctly.

While portfolio composition is highly important in how my company's portfolio is constructed, by far the most sensible way to value my company as a whole is a multiple of book value, just like Intel Capital. Any other valuation method would be silly.
