I am really glad you felt loved by your father. Some children do not, however. Certainly, hugging and loving your child by being physically demonstrative are easiest for small children to understand. Since never being told you were loved by your father is such a common occurrence in America that it is often talked about publicly, most recently by Peter Fonda that I can remember, there is an obvious need for children to actually hear the words.

Why should it be laudable for a child to figure out the pieces of a screwed up puzzle of repressed emotions? I am glad you realized you were loved, but it certainly isn't a parenting style to emulate, particularly since you are so concerned about your children staying off drugs. You can scare children about drugs every day of their lives, but it is children in pain of some sort who are most likely to end up getting hooked on them, so the best way to IMMUNIZE them and keep them safe is to kiss them, hug them, and tell them every day how much you love them.
