LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Struggling British biotechnology company ReNeuron Holdings Plc, Europe's first listed stem cell company, said on Monday it had received a bid approach and was in discussions that could lead to an offer.

The company gave no further details in a brief statement but one industry source told Reuters the potential bidder was a private British concern. The source said media reports that unlisted UK cell therapy firm CellFactors or U.S.-based Geron Corp (NasdaqNM:GERN) were in talks were inaccurate.

Shares in ReNeuron, which have plunged on concerns about its delayed clinical trial programme since the group floated on London's Alternative Investment Market in 2000, rose 1-1/2 pence, or 31 percent, to 5-3/4p by 0815 GMT
