A/W is going through a product transition towards there next generation entertainment product called Maya. Originally promised to ship (last year's suport contracts said "including Maya")Q1 97, in March they rolled it back til Q1 98. It is the integration of all the Wavefront tools into Alias, it will also be the first Alias release to show off the graphics hardware of SGI's. It seems to be very tailored to large studio work (Square, ILM, DD, etc.) and may require technical support beyond that found in smaller shops. A/W has taken to a very low profile lately, contracting their field presence and even leaving their website(www.aw.sgi.com) unupdated since last November. The current products for automobile styling and industrial design continue to roll on and get better. i use Poweranimator 60 to 90 hours a week and haven't seen anything that i would rather use. it suits my style. I strongly believe rumors that the full app will be ported to NT but that's of no personal interest. the Renderer on NT will ship in the fall. Rendering being a comodity task, everyone looks for the least expensive box that will run the renderer. The R10K on the O2 renders at about half the speed of the R10K on the I2 Impact. Many more educational facilities now offer Alias training, but i believe that buying PA and using it is the quickest and best way to learn. there is an ALIAS-L where most of the pro users corespond and any difficulties will be answered. when will the $500 mil that SGI spent for Alias and Wavefront show a profit? I think it was a defensive purchase after MicroSoft bought SoftImage, Alias's only competitor in entertainment market, and SGI feared that if ??? bought Alias or (Wavefront(which was going south at the time))...I don't think SGI breaks out revenues by division, but i'd love to see the numbers if anyone has them. Was Paragraph a defensive purchase, after Microsoft's purchase of Dimention X and the Microsoft HP entry into massmarket 3D? How about Cray?
