Concurrent Computer Unveils New Innovations in Video-On-Demand at Western Cable Show 2000
Demonstrations Include Concurrent's New VOD System, Personal Video Channel Offerings, Subscription Video-On-Demand, and More
biz.yahoo.com
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 21, 2000-- Concurrent Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:CCUR - news), the leading provider of Video-On-Demand (VOD) systems, announced today its plans for the upcoming Western Cable Show beginning Nov. 29 in Los Angeles, Ca. (Booth No. 945). Concurrent will demonstrate its industry-leading VOD solutions as well as several new technologies and products that capitalize on its core VOD system.

Digital Video Solutions... On Demand

At the show, Concurrent will emphasize the breadth of possibilities new VOD technology is bringing to the broadband industry. Concurrent's show theme, ``Digital Video Solutions... On Demand,'' emphasizes the trend in technology to cater to the consumer's demand for convenience, choice, and control.

Jack Bryant, President and CEO of Concurrent stated, ``Concurrent is leading the industry in VOD system-wide deployments. We understand, however, that VOD holds much more potential than just movies-on-demand. VOD technology promises to offer consumers a functionality that influences the whole way they watch television. For operators, the extension of VOD to other VOD-like services offers more competitive differentiators and more revenue-generating opportunities.''

Concurrent's New MediaHawk Model 2000 VOD System

On Wednesday, Nov. 29, Concurrent will introduce its new MediaHawk(TM) Model 2000 Video Server solution for broadband applications. This system is the next generation of Concurrent's original MediaHawk system. Over the last two years, Concurrent's MediaHawk system has earned the reputation as the industry-leading VOD solution. Known for its scalability and proven performance, Concurrent's MediaHawk supported the cable industry's first commercial system-wide launch at Time Warner's Oceanic Cable and the industry's largest commercial VOD deployment at Time Warner's Tampa Bay division. The new MediaHawk Model 2000 maintains the unrivaled capabilities of its predecessor, but has been optimized to offer broadband operators even greater performance, multiplatform capability, a smaller footprint, and a greater value.

Concurrent's Personal Video Channel

Another innovative demonstration Concurrent will be showcasing is its Personal Video Channel (PVC) technology - an extension of VOD. Concurrent's PVC technology features time-shifted broadcast content. By incorporating VOD technology to regular broadcast television, consumers will have the ability to choose the broadcast programs they want to watch, when they want to watch them, and will have all the control VOD provides, such as rewind, pause, fast forward, etc.

Subscription Video-On-Demand with Industry-Leading Programmers

Concurrent partners with three leading Subscription Programming Networks to demonstrate Subscription Video-On-Demand (SVOD). HBO features its HBO On Demand services running on Concurrent's MediaHawk system and Motorola's digital platform. The Showtime Network features its Showtime On Demand services running on Concurrent's MediaHawk system and Motorola's digital platform. Starz Encore features its Starz On Demand SVOD services running on Concurrent's MediaHawk system and Scientific-Atlanta's digital platform.

IP Streaming VOD

For companies interested in distance learning, education, multimedia, and corporate training applications, Concurrent will be demonstrating its IP streaming solutions. In this demonstration, Concurrent's MediaHawk VOD technology is used to stream video to the PC for IP applications, such as the one being used by Horizon.com in Singapore in which thousands of people receive ``edutainment'' directly to their home PCs.

DSL Streaming VOD

Concurrent's VOD demonstration for DSL features the MediaHawk VOD system streaming integrated voice, data, and video services over digital subscriber line (DSL). In coordination with mPhase Technologies, Inc., Concurrent exhibits a complete solution that provides DSL-based broadcast quality VOD.
