i just emailed mcafee tech support in your behalf. i explained the name of the virus positive you received (backdoor-bl) and the conditions under which you receive it (installing an ms optical mouse and driver/software).

i told the tech that you also ran blackice defender, and asked if, like the symantec false positive for blackice, could your virus program could be tripping over blackice? essentially i wanted to determine if this was a known issue. i explained that i had searched the mcafee virus database and found no backdoor.bl

i received a response within minutes, and here it is:

"Dear Mark,

Yes it is possibly a fals alarm. Actually i'm sure it is. We do sometimes get these false backddor virus alarms. So please do tell your friend it is ok. There is no known virus like the one that is detected on his computer. I will find out if we have a patch that can sort that problem out for him. But please do tell your friend we are sorry for the inconvenience. Have a nice day. If you have any more questions or problems please contact us again.

if jaco does get back to me with more info, i'll pass it along.
