Alcatel Not Preparing Bid For Marconi - Source >ALA MONI

11 Jul 12:07

PARIS (Dow Jones)--French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA
(ALA) has no plans to bid for beleaguered U.K. rival Marconi PLC (MONI), a
person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires Wednesday.

The person played down rumors Wednesday about a deal with Marconi, saying it
wouldn't make sense for Alcatel.

Alcatel abandoned talks in May to take over Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU).

Shares in Alcatel, which said Monday that it would cut an additional 2,500
workers at its U.S. operations in an acceleration of its cost-cutting program,
fell Wednesday to their lowest level since November 1998. The shares closed at
EUR17.92, down EUR0.9, or 4.8%.

Marconi shares ended Wednesday down 5.5 pence, or 4.9%, at 106.5 pence.
